"Langas į šviesą", a window to light

this was the title given to the performance - exhibition "Light in Light" that took place in Vilnius Railway Station (Lithuania), from November 9 to December 1, 2007.

Vilnius city enthusiastically welcomed the event and chose it as one of the major opening initiatives for a three-year cultural programme planned for "Vilnius - European Capital of Culture 2009" nomination. "Light in Light" was organized in the framework of "LUX - International Light Festival", initiated by public institution "Vilnius - European Capital of Culture 2009" in the gloomiest season of the year with a wish to kindle more light in the Lithuanian capital and to encourage people to rediscover their home town in a different light.

"Light in Light" was brought to Lithuania by its author and director, prof. Paolo Di Trapani (Insubria University, Como, Italy), who in 2005 was granted a prestigious EU Marie Curie Chair at Vilnius University, Quantum Electronics Department. The exhibition was part of the 6th Framework Program Marie Curie Chair project "STELLA".

public participation

The event was open to a very broad audience so that every visitor could find something interesting and still inexperienced: from a primary school pupil, artist, writer or photographer to a physicist, naturalist or, finally, to every open-minded person.

The exhibition was open 23 days, from Monday to Sunday. Groups composed of approx. 30 visitors each were accompanied through the exhibition rooms by specially prepared guides-actors, mostly physicists, but also professional actors and students from Lithuanian schools of high and higher education.

The exhibition was a huge success that brought to Vilnius visitors from all over the country. In 23 days the event was visited by 15 000 people, of which 9 900 schoolchildren and students from over 200 Lithuanian educational institutions, organized groups of school and university professors, etc.

A high impact of the event on the Lithuanian society was witnessed by an elevated interest and active collaboration of a wide range of Lithuanian institutions.
